KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

AND

BOWL FOR THE CURE

The Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor Susan G. Komen, her sister, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36.  Today, the Foundation is an organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events for the Komen Race for the Cure to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Foundation fulfills its mission through support of breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world.  Through fiscal year 2005, the Komen Foundation, together with its Affiliate network, cancer partners and generous donors, has invested $650 million in breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

For questions about breast health or breast cancer, visit the Komen Foundation’s Web site or call the Komen Foundation’s National toll-free Breast Care helpline at 1-800-I’M AWARE.

Bowl for the Cure is a year-round fund-raising and breast cancer awareness initiative sponsored by USBC in partnership with the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  Through the efforts of bowlers nationwide, nearly $4.5 million has been raised for the Komen Foundation and its affiliates since the Bowl for the Cure program’s inception in 2000.

USBC leagues across the nation organize Bowl for the Cure events in February, often designating one bowling session to donate a specific amount, such as one penny per pin, or by staging pledge nights, raffles and auctions.  Whether on a large or small scale, each donation helps make a difference.

Bowlers around the country rallied their families, friends and communities to raise $656,500 this past season for the fight against breast cancer, bringing the Bowl for the Cure program’s six year total to nearly $4.5 million.  The state of Oregon was included in this total this year as it was our first year of joining the event.  We didn’t donate very much this first year, but it was there.

“It is the commitment and teamwork of the USBC and the bowling communities that have made this program such an outstanding success,”  said Cindy Schneible, Komen Foundation vice president of cause related marketing and sponsorship.  “You bowl for each other and you bowl for people everywhere who have been touched by breast cancer.  You are making a difference in the world.”

Nearly 1,650 USBC members and guests attended the convention and participated in the annual pink glow stick ceremony.  Lights in the meeting hall dimmed and each attendee whirled a glow stick to commemorate the lives of those who have been touched by breast cancer and reaffirm their commitment to the Bowl for the Cure.

Now for our OSUSBC efforts.  As most of you already know we have numerous things that are for sale.  We are also going to be doing the Bowl for the Cure pink glow stick ceremony today so if you haven’t purchased your pink glow stick please do so now.

All of the money from the sale of these things is for the OSUSBC Bowl for the Cure.  This is my donation to the cause.  The 14 pound Viz-A-Ball that is being raffled is being donated by Charlie Thomas of Bend.  This will be given away on Sunday morning.  The tickets are $1.00 a ticket or 6 for $5.00.

On the tables you also have copies of the Mail-A-Graphic tournament that will be done October 15th through October 28th.  The sanction has been applied for.   Please take these home and share with you fellow bowlers.  This is for both men and women.  It is very simple, if you have questions please look me up or e-mail me with them.  We only had 80 entries this past February so we need to work on this.

I would like you to go home and appoint a Komen Bowl for the Cure Chairman and get some things going in your own local associations.

Last year our state of Oregon was challenged by the state of Washington to see who could raise the most.  It was decided to put this off until we got up and going, but I do have the chairman’s e mail address when ever you think we are ready.

Ione said that we have a check ready to sent to USBC for $4,138.75 for this past year.  We need to do better than this, don’t you think?
